Report recommends more housing regulation

Both estate agents and the private rental sector should be subject
to more regulation, a new government backed report has said.
The government review of regulation and redress in the UK housing
market's final report, authored by Colin Jones of Herriot-Watt
University, has concluded that the principal professional in every
estate agency and letting agency should have an advanced
qualification to provide a "consistent" service.
Estate agents should also follow an associated code of practice and
carry personal indemnity insurance.
The National Association of Estate Agents welcomed the report, with
chief executive Peter Bolton King commenting: "For years, the
National Association of Estate Agents has been calling for an
appropriate level of regulation to be introduced as mandatory in
the UK housing market."
In its response, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors noted
that the conclusions were similar to those of last year's Carsberg
report and urged the government to implement the recommendations
swiftly.
